Bayern boss Guardiola on Shaqiri future: 'I think he will stay'

The Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool target is now being tipped to stay at the Bundesliga champions.

Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola has told reporters in Germany that he expects Xherdan Shaqiri to stay at the Allianz Arena.

Shaqiri has long been linked with both Tottenham and Liverpool but was yesterday reported to be close to a move to Wolfsburg.

Guardiola and Bayern's executives have in the past stated that the Swiss attacking midfielder could leave Germany, with Premier League interest in the 23-year-old reportedly particularly strong.

Now, however, the Bayern boss has suggested that Shaqiri will stay with the club, potentially scuppering interest from both Liverpool and Spurs.

When asked about the future of the winger and midfielder Emile Hjojberg, Guardiola told reporters: "I think they will stay. If they want something then they need to speak to Matthias Sammer."

As January approaches, then, more and more reports seem to be surfacing about Shaqiri's future. None of them appear to be too encouraging for Tottenham or Liverpool, however.

If Spurs or the Reds truly are interested in the 23-year-old, it may take a lot of persuading - and financial clout - to make a move happen.
