When Willy Sagnol took over at Bordeaux this summer he made a number of impressive deals to strengthen Les Girondins. One of them was the loan move for Liverpool’s Tiago Ilori, but a spate of injuries has kept the centre-back from getting a real run in the team.
Last night the defender made his return to the first team in the Coupe de la Ligue fixture against Lille, but it wasn't a happy return as his side lost 6-5 on penalties, although playing 95 minutes will boost Ilori for the rest of the season.
It is difficult to assess where Ilori is in Sagnol’s plans. The Liverpool man made his return to the match-day squad in the 3-2 win over Lorient two weeks ago, but was then dropped completely from the Nantes game at the weekend.
With FCGB suffering a number of injuries, he should be part of the team that takes on Lyon on Sunday night.
Bordeaux took the lead on Wednesday night after the impressive Thomas Touré tormented the Lille defence down the left, turning David Rozehnal and Sebastien Corchia inside out. His cross found Mariano and the Brazilian right-back added the finish.
Lille would hit back before half-time, Michael Frey well-placed at the back post to turn in Djibril Sidibé’s cross after great work from Ronny Rodelin to hold the ball up.
Ilori was beaten twice for the goal. First Sidibé went past him with ease on the edge of the box, he then had the chance to close down Rodelin, but he left just enough space for the forward to squeeze the pass back to Sidibé.
Bordeaux would go on to lose 6-5 on penalties after nine attempts, but with the number of injuries they have at the moment, it may be a blessing in disguise if they are to make an attack on the top four positions.
Ilori will have a bigger role to play as the season continues, but if the Liverpool man wants to make an impact, he will have to show more than he did on Wednesday. Sagnol will be hoping that the defender is still finding his match sharpness.
