Christoph Metzelder, who rejected Manchester United, urges Marco Reus to do the same

Puma Marco Reus

The former Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid star once faced a similar choice to Reus in 2003.

Borussia Dortmund playmaker Marco Reus has been in the headlines for the wrong reasons recently. His chocolate ankle struck again, seeing him ruled out of action until the end of January and he was also fined over half a million euros for many years of driving illegally.

But he also remains in the headlines because of the big bullseye he seemingly has on his back.

Plenty of teams are lurking around the idea of signing the German international, who has a reported release clause of £19.9 million.

Bayern Munich are keen, as are Barcelona - while in England the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool have all been mentioned.

Of course, Manchester United are also said to be keen.

The club have been linked with Reus for several years, as have Real Madrid.

Now a man who once had the choice of staying at Dortmund, joining Manchester United or signing for Real Madrid has spoken about Reus' situation.

The man in question is Christoph Metzelder. The former German international started his career at Dortmund and in 2013 he could have left.

Both United and Real made an offer for the player, but he stayed with Dortmund, stating:

"Concrete offers from Madrid and Manchester United were presented to me, but both the club and I immediately blocked them.

"Naturally it was an honour to receive these enquiries from the two clubs for me, but a change is not applicable to me at this time."

In the end he did go on to sign for Real in 2007 on a free transfer and he feels, if Reus has the same choices he does, a move to Real is the best option.

He is quoted as telling Bild:

“I think that Real Madrid would be the easier choice. They have a wider global reach than Barcelona, while they signify Catalunya. They are more regional and prefer to give chances to the younger guys.

“Although the truth is that, at Real Madrid there will be less room to manoeuvre in given the wealth of attacking options they have. But if there is a club capable of ensuring that, it’s Real Madrid.”

Not content on rejecting United nearly 15 years ago, it seems Metzelder is now trying to tempt a player away from Manchester United in 2015.

Certainly not a popular figure round them parts.
