Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane has underlined the importance of tonight’s League Cup quarter-final tie against Newcastle United.
Spurs will host their Premier League rivals at White Hart Lane tonight for a place in the semi-finals of the competition.
“It’s going to be a tough game,” Tottenham’s official website quotes the 21-year-old as saying. “Newcastle beat us at the Lane the last time we played them so we want some revenge for that.
“They’ve done well since they beat us, so we’ll have to be on our game to get through to the semi-finals.
“I think we’ve made it clear that we want to do well in the cups. We want to win this game and get into the semis. Wembley isn’t too far away and that’s where we’re aiming to get.”
Tonight’s game is tough to call, and given what is at stake, both teams will be fielding strong line-ups.
Playing at home will give Tottenham an advantage, but memories of the 2-1 defeat to Newcastle at White Hart Lane in October in the Premier League will still be fresh in the players’ minds.
Both Newcastle and Spurs are big clubs, and both are starving of major silverware. The League Cup is hugely important in that perspective.
Winning tonight will also help Spurs build on their victory over Swansea City on Sunday. The win at the Liberty Stadium was Tottenham’s first this month.
What Spurs have lacked this season is consistency. A win against Newcastle could help them gain that, at least for now.
