Carlos Mane was one of many who disappointed in Southampton's defeat to Sheffield United.
Sheffield United claimed another high-profile scalp as they knocked Southampton out of the Capital One Cup on Tuesday night.
The Blades are into the semi-finals, the same stage they reached in last season's FA Cup - an impressive achievement for the League One club.
For the Saints it was immensely disappointing. It showed how confidence has dropped after a winless Premier League run - which followed such a strong start to the season.
Romanian signing Florin Gardos was sent off in the 1-0 loss, but it was teammate Sadio Mane who picked up a large share of the flak from supporters.
Mane had looked good in the earlier rounds of the tournament, particularly against Arsenal, but the £11 million summer signing from Red Bull Salzburg failed to live up to his price tag at Bramall Lane.
He played 70 minutes, touching the ball 34 times, and completing only 66 per cent of his passes. He made three fouls and was booked, and failed to find a teammate with his only cross.
Worse still, he was dispossessed three times, more than any other Southampton player.
The Senegalese international was playing on the right rather than his favoured left wing with Ryan Bertrand brought forward into midfield to accommodate Matt Targett at left-back, but even so it was a disappointing display.
In the Premier League this season Mane has one goal and one assist in 13 appearances.
Here's a look at how Southampton fans reacted to his display on Twitter...
Mane was shocking tonight, poor all round and his poor decision gave away the freekick. Only 1 decent chance all night #saintsfc— the92dotnet (@the92dotnet) December 16, 2014
Mane is either amazing in training or has seen Ronald Koeman's internet history #saintsfc— Ash (@ashleighking14) December 16, 2014
I'm sure Guly is very upset that #saintsfc have replaced him with Manè as a scapegoat! Win as a team lose as a team!!— Voice of St Marys (@voiceofsms) December 16, 2014
Dunno what's more of a disgrace... Freddo's being a quid or Manè being able to wear the famous red and white shirt. #saintsfc— Saint Rhys (@RhysTheSaint) December 16, 2014
You'd have a hard time convincing me that Sadio Mane is a Professional footballer at the moment #saintsfc— Andy Wareham (@Andy_Wareham_) December 16, 2014
Finally got home after the worst performance i've seen from #saintsfc in years. Gardos and Mane particularly bad but everyone sucked tbh— Chris Bartlett (@N009) December 17, 2014
Long and mane ain't premier class. Need to spend spend spend next month #saintsfc— andy curtis (@saintgert) December 16, 2014
