Spurs face the side who, like themselves, are struggling in their domestic league despite their good form in Europe.
The North Londoners host the first leg of the tie on February 19, before they travel to Italy to face the Viola a week later. Whilst one of the tougher ties that Spurs could have been handed - facing a side who were seeded having finished top of their group - it is expected that the Premier League club should overcome any troubles they will face at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.
There are a few well known faces amongst the Fiorentina ranks, with two Premier League loanees in their squad, as well as a host of former players who turned out in England’s top flight. Manchester United target Juan Cuadrado is the real star in the side, but former Manchester City assistant manager Fausto Salsano believes that it is the two Premier League loanees who make Fiorentina the favourites against Spurs.
Micah Richards and Marko Marin joined the Viola on season-long loan deals at the opening of the campaign, but have been nothing but bit-part players. Chelsea winger Marin has made just four appearances this term - all in the Europa League - whereas Richards has eight games to his name, with five European appearances registered. Despite their lack of appearances, Salsano has named the Premier League duo as the two players who could make Fiorentina favourites over Tottenham.
Quoted by TMW, Salsano - who worked with Richards at City - said: “Viola are favourites against the Spurs. Tottenham are an important team, and it is a difficult environment but Fiorentina has a chance to go through.
“It might seem difficult but the Viola have the team in order to progress.
“Marin is important as is Richards, in perspective they can be the players we focus on [to defeat Spurs].”
