Report: Wolfsburg set to sign Shaqiri ahead of Spurs & Liverpool

Xherdan Shaqiri

Liverpool and Tottenham could both miss out on the Swiss midfielder should he join the Bundesliga side.

Wolfsburg are in pole position to sign Bayern Munich's Xherdan Shaqiri, according to the Daily Mail.

The Swiss attacking midfielder has been repeatedly linked with both Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur this season, especially since both Bayern boss Pep Guardiola and those above him in the Bundesliga champions' hierarchy suggested Shaqiri was free to leave the club.

The Mail, however, report that Wolfsburg are set to scupper both clubs' plans to attract the 23-year-old to the Premier League.

Shaqiri could be available for £16 million - affordable for both Liverpool and Spurs. The key advantage for Wolfsburg, however, is that they look likeliest to secure Champions League football next season.

Tottenham and Liverpool could, then, suffer a similar fate to Arsenal when the Gunners looked close to signing Luis Gustavo, only for the midfielder to snub English interest to leave Bayern for Wolfsburg.

The Reds currently sit 11th in the Premier League table, with Spurs four places - but only three points - above them.
