Manchester United winger Angel di Maria has been voted as the best foreign-based Argentine player of the year.
The 26-year-old came top in a vote taken by Argentina’s sports journalists, ahead of Barcelona forward and 2014 FIFA Ballon d’Or nominee Lionel Messi.
Di Maria, who joined United from Real Madrid in the summer transfer window for a British-record fee of £59.7 million, was given the Olimpia de Plata (Silver Olimpia award) at a ceremony on Tuesday, according to Reuters.
It is a huge honour for the former Benfica star, who has had a truly exceptional year. Di Maria was key in Madrid winning the Champions League and the Copa del Rey last season, and he was then instrumental in leading Argentina to the final of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil in the summer.
In 11 Premier League appearances so far this season, United star Di Maria has scored goals and created 31 chances, while having a pass accuracy of 80% and a shot accuracy of 48%.
