Newcastle United took a calculated risk on Ayoze Perez over the summer and have been handsomely rewarded for that show of faith.
The 21-year-old forward was plucked from the Spanish second tier and thrust into the English top-flight, with the Magpies having seen enough to suggest that the youngster was capable of adjusting quickly to the demands of the Premier League.
Their scouting system has been proved correct, with a modest investment in a player with considerable promise set to deliver rich dividends.
It should come as no surprise to find that Perez has slipped seamlessly into the St James’ Park fold, given that he was also reported to be attracting interest from Barcelona and Real Madrid while shining for Tenerife, but he could have been forgiven for requiring a period in which to find his feet.
With there seemingly no need for such luxuries, Newcastle are now expecting big things from a man with four goals to his name this season, with Paul Dummett among those tipping the lively frontman for a bright future on Tyneside.
Speaking at an EA Sports FIFA 15 event, the Magpies defender told HITC Sport: “He’s done really well and scored some goals for us that have got us important wins. He’s only a young lad as well so he can only go from strength to strength and become a really good player.
“Scoring goals brings the confidence so hopefully he can carry on for the rest of the season. If he can do that, the more wins we will get.”
Perez is not the only summer signing to have caught Dummett’s eye, though, with all of those acquired by Alan Pardew during the off-season helping to improve the collective quality of the squad.
The 23-year-old academy graduate added: “I think they have all impressed in different ways. It always takes a while to gel together, but they have all done really well and brought different qualities to the team.”
The challenge now for Newcastle is to ensure that a promising opening to the season for familiar and fresh faces is built upon and that momentum is maintained throughout the campaign.
If they can get the likes of Perez, Remy Cabella, Daryl Janmaat and Jack Colback firing on all cylinders, then a push for Europe becomes a distinct possibility.
There is also Siem de Jong to be welcomed back, with the Holland international midfielder expected to make a timely return to competitive action in the New Year after nursing his way back from a knee injury suffered in training.
