De Gea’s new deal ready long ago but Spaniard waiting for something - report

David Gea saves against Sunderland

According to a report from Spain, Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea was still holding out for a move to Real Madrid until recently.

The rumours linking David de Gea with a Manchester United exit did a swift about-turn in recent hours, with the Sun claiming the Spanish international has told his teammates he is staying put.

If true, it is the best possible news for a club that is seeing the 24-year-old blossom into one of the best goalkeepers in Europe, a player who week in, week out is saving United points aplenty.

The Sun’s report claims De Gea has told fellow United players he is going nowhere and is ready to sign a new deal. But another report was published in the early hours of Wednesday morning that makes equally interesting reading.

Spanish broadsheet El Confidencial has its own slant on the De Gea situation; but before United fans get worried again, they also think the stopper will remain at Old Trafford…but for slightly different reasons.

El Confidencial claims an agreement has been in place between the player and United for some time, and that he has only been holding out on signing it as he waited to see if a move to Real Madrid was possible.

There have been previous claims that De Gea has asked his agent, Jorge Mendes, to arrange a move to the Bernabeu. But the latest report states that Mendes has failed in this regard, and with Iker Casillas rediscovering his form any move to Madrid is now highly unlikely.

There is no telling what is true and what is not, but the Spanish press have long claimed De Gea dreams of a move to Real. However, provided he puts pen to paper on a new contract at Old Trafford, United fans can breathe a huge sigh of relief.
