Crystal Palace linked to Cole loan, wage bill may be problem

Ashley Cole

Ashley Cole's time at Roma has been far from ideal and there are reports that he could be headed back to London with Crystal Palace.

Ashley Cole's bold decision to sign for Roma hasn't entirely paid off and he may be offered the chance to return to more familiar territory with a loan switch to Crystal Palace.

When Cole's eight-year relationship with Chelsea ended in the summer, he surprised some by choosing to move to Serie A side Roma.

Crystal Palace were one of the other clubs in contention for the ex-England international's signature, and it seems the Selhurst Park side are still hoping to lure him.

The Daily Mail believes that Palace boss Neil Warnock has identified a left-back as the main priority for January's transfer window and Cole is top of the list of possible arrivals.

Cole has dropped out of the starting line-up at Roma and has been savaged by the Italian press for some of his performances this season, most notably during the Italian side's thrashing at the hands of Bayern Munich.

Roma boss Rudi Garcia would probably not stand in the way of Cole leaving, but the wage bill presents a sizeable problem.

At present Cole earns around £80,000 per week and Palace would only be able to pay around half of that.

However, Cole may be tempted to drop his demands for the chance to return to the club where he spent a very successful loan period in 2000 before breaking into the first team at Arsenal.
