What’s wrong with Holtby? Spurs proved right by midfielder’s form

Lewis Holtby is proving Tottenham Hotspur were right to send him on loan as his poor run of form continues.

Of all the Tottenhan Hotspur players currently out on loan, Lewis Holtby is easily the most high-profile.

While most of the players Mauricio Pochettino has sent out on loan this season are youngsters making their first tentative steps in the senior game, 24-year-old Holtby has nearly 200 club appearances under his belt.

Reports earlier this season suggested Hamburg were set to make Holtby’s temporary move a permanent one for £5million, but since those initial claims in Germany things have gone quiet and the player’s form could lead to more questions than answers in the months ahead.

Since leaving Tottenham, the attacking midfielder has played 13 games for the Bundesliga club, but he is yet to score and has just one assist.

For the most part, Holtby plays entire matches, but the presence of Rafael van der Vaart means he has been shunted around the pitch, featuring in central midfield, attacking midfield and on the left wing already this campaign.

While Gylfi Sigurdsson has flourished since leaving White Hart Lane, Holtby’s record suggests Tottenham were right to bid him farewell, albeit temporarily.

The only question is: What does the future hold now for a player who seemed set for a £5million move but whose poor form makes that considerably less likely?
