Tottenham were almost lining up against Benjamin Stambouli.
Spurs signed Benjamin Stambouli from Montpellier at the end of the transfer window, but beat off competition from Fiorentina to do so.
Stambouli's agent even criticised the Viola for their protracted efforts to sign him, which allowed Spurs to steal in.
"Fiorentina's error was wasting too much time to close the deal with Montpellier, about two weeks."
A third party agent, Fabrizio Ferrari told the same site: "The deal was good, the player I thought the end was in Florence, and maybe it was the best choice for him."
What's probable is if Stambouli had signed for Fiorentina, he would not be waiting until mid-December for his first league start of the season.
He has however shown promising signs of his talent, and if he can convince Mauricio Pochettino before February that he deserves to be a regular starter - he could yet make Fiorentina regret their failure to close the deal.
