Catalan newspaper Sport claims confidently that Manchester United will sign Victor Valdes this January.
The Spanish shot stopper has been training with the club, but there has been speculation over whether they’d offer him a contract to become David De Gea’s deputy at Old Trafford.
There have also been suggestions that Valdes could pave the way for De Gea to leave United, but Sport doesn’t believe that’s a possibility.
“Victor Valdes will become a Manchester United player in January,” reports Sport.
“Valdes is facing the final stretch of his recovery (from a knee problem) and should be ready to compete in mid-January – Valdes will compete for the starting role with David De Gea.”
De Gea’s form in recent weeks for United has been phenomenal as he’s proven to be the decisive factor in some big game situations, securing points for United as they have consolidated in third place.
What he hasn’t had this season is someone keeping him on his toes and someone more experienced to occasionally look to for advice.
Where United have to be careful is over Valdes being too influential on De Gea.
De Gea is doing nothing wrong at the moment so it’s important changes are kept to a minimum around the club’s undoubted number one at the moment.
Valdes will most likely only play in the FA Cup, should United progress through the rounds, and infrequently in the league when manager Louis van Gaal needs a rest.
This cannot be considered a move by United as they prepare for De Gea’s exit. It’s a no brainer and hopefully Valdes will be accepting of his situation as deputy and nothing more.
