Michael Owen writes off Manchester United’s chances of winning the Premier League title this season.

Michael Owen does not believe that Manchester United can launch a challenge for the Premier League title this season.

Louis van Gaal’s side have won their last six league matches to move up to third in the standings with 31 points from 16 games.

United are currently five points behind second-placed Manchester City and eight points behind leaders Chelsea, leading some to suggest that they are now in the race for the title.

However, Owen, a former United striker, does not believe that the Red Devils can challenge for the championship, but he is impressed with the way Van Gaal’s team have been playing so far.

“I don’t think so,” Squawka quotes Owen as telling BT Sport when asked if United were title contenders after their 3-0 win over Liverpool on Sunday.

“The interesting thing is that they’re getting results now and they’re not playing well. They’re not at the top of their game, which is a scary proposition for some of the teams they’re about to face.

“I still don’t think they’re clicking. I still think that Chelsea and Manchester City are a step ahead of them, but I think they’re booked for third place.

“I think it’s starting to come together. I still think they need one or two additions to the squad despite the millions that they’ve spent, but they are starting to click. I’d be very very surprised if they mounted a title challenge.”

Many will agree with Owen’s opinion. Despite winning six in a row, United have not been very convincing and are not as strong as Chelsea or Manchester City.

At this point in time, it would not be too wise to claim that United are in the title race. But if the Manchester outfit maintain their winning run during the festive period and are able to close the gap on the top two, then they could well be considered as contenders.
