Manchester United loan round-up: Varela and James impress; no goals for strikers

Rounding up how Manchester United’s current crop of loan stars fared at the weekend.

Manchester United won 3-0 against Liverpool on Sunday to continue their outstanding run of form, but while Louis van Gaal’s men were doing the business at Old Trafford a number of loan players were in action elsewhere.

Here we take a look at some of United’s current loan stars and how they did at the weekend:

Nick Powell – Leicester City

Prior to the weekend midfielder Nick Powell had played just 25 minutes in the Premier League for Leicester City. But while he started the match against Manchester City on the bench, Powell came on for the last 17 minutes as the Foxes chased an equaliser.

Ultimately it was not to be, but there would have been plenty of United fans hoping he could do them a favour from afar.

Reece James – Rotherham United

Reece James helped Rotherham to another clean-sheet as the Championship side drew with Nottingham Forest.

That result came a week after another 0-0 draw against Cardiff City, proving United’s young left-back is doing a fine job in defence for his temporary club.

Angelo Henriquez – Dinamo Zagreb

Dinamo Zagreb defeated Slaven Koprivnica 3-2 on Sunday, with Chilean striker Angelo Henriquez not on the score-sheet for once.

The on-loan United man has netted 14 goals for the Croatian side this season and he is being strongly tipped to return to Old Trafford and fight for a starting berth at the end of his current spell.

Javier Hernandez – Real Madrid

Javier Hernandez was a substitute for Manchester United and now he is exactly the same for Real Madrid.

The Spanish side won 4-1 against Almeria on Friday but the Mexican international remained on the bench throughout.

Wilfried Zaha – Crystal Palace

Wilfried Zaha followed up his fine performance against Tottenham Hotspur with another start, this time against Stoke City.

But the winger did not have the best of games, failing to play a key pass or have a shot on target and seeing his passing accuracy reach just 66 per cent.

Guillermo Varela – Real Madrid Castilla

Uruguayan right-back Guillermo Varela enjoyed another victory for Real Madrid Castilla on Saturday as he played in the 3-1 win against Real Sociedad B.

Varela was booked in the 63rd minute and saw his teammate Alvaro Medran sent off just a minute later, but the United full-back continues to look the part and one wonders where his future lies given his fine form in Spain.
