Manchester United have convinced a teenage talent to sign despite Manchester City's interest, according to a new report.

Manchester United are claimed to have held off an approach from Manchester City to sign a player within their grasp.

The Red Devils have had Venancio da Silva Monteiro training with them over the past few months, and The Mail claim he has agreed to sign.

The paper report: "United have held off competition from neighbours Manchester City to sign Portuguese winger Venancio da Silva Monteiro... his performances had attracted interest from City who were also keen to sign him."

It would appear a deal has been reached, which did not look like the case earlier this month.

Exactly two weeks ago, The Mail had claimed: "United believed they were close to reaching agreement but it is understood the player's father is now considering an approach from rivals City and he could sign if negotiations go well over the coming weeks."

Monteiro has been training with United since April after being convinced to leave Benfica in an attempt to win a deal, and to suddenly lose out on the winger would have been a tough break.

The wider context to this is that City's brand new academy was not able to sway Monteiro away from United towards them. That may the the case with different players down the line, but in this instance it has not proved a vital factor.
