Gaetano D'Agostino says Tottenham Hotspur are only scary for his old side in terms of reputation.
Former Fiorentina midfielder Gaetano D’Agostino says the only scary thing about playing Tottenham Hotspur for his old club is their name.
Spurs were handed a difficult tie in the draw for the last 32 of the Europa League yesterday, as they face two matches against the experienced Serie A side.
D’Agostino feels that his old team’s improving form should be enough to help get them through the two matches.
“I do not believe Tottenham is favoured, the technical level of Fiorentina is good,” he told TMW.
“Fiorentina is recovering well in the league after watching the latest results – Tottenham are only scary in name.”
Spurs are one of the sides that all teams would have wanted to avoid because they are unpredictable and that makes them a dangerous side to face up against.
Mauricio Pochettino’s team could excel with a little bit of an underdogs tag, with key players arguably more likely to perform in a glamour tie over a lower profile, grittier and more difficult match.
Tottenham played well through the group stage but Pochettino commented on a lack of discipline as the main reason the team didn’t have a more dominant record over their first six games in the competition.
“The important thing is that there is not a lot of goals in the first leg because English teams suffer more away.”
That suggests that D’Agostino feels his old team are likely to shut up shop in the first game before trying to win the tie in the second leg.
Therefore, Spurs have to try and make the most of their home advantage, giving themselves a lead they can then look to protect or add to during the second game as they aim for the last 16.
