Arsenal loan round-up: Wellington Silva against Ronaldo; striker's goal-drought

Emirates Stadium 3

A round-up of how Arsenal’s loan stars got on for their current clubs this weekend.

Arsenal’s first team followed up their Champions League victory against Galatasaray with a 4-1 win at home to Newcastle United on Saturday.

But while Arsene Wenger’s senior stars were shining at the Emirates Stadium a number of the Gunners’ younger players were attempting to do the same elsewhere.

Here we take a look at how some of Arsenal’s loan stars got on at the weekend:

Benik Afobe – MK Dons

Arsenal forward Benik Afobe could not add to his goal-tally at the weekend as MK Dons drew 1-1 with Preston North End.

The 21-year-old has netted 18 times for his loan club this season but he has now gone three matches without a goal since his hat-trick against Colchester United.

Austin Lipman – Boreham Wood

Austin Lipman was named on the bench for Boreham Wood’s match against Staines Town at the weekend.

Boreham Wood won the match 3-0 but the young Arsenal striker played no part.

Wellington Silva – Almeria

Almeria were trounced 4-1 by Real Madrid on Friday with Cristiano Ronaldo adding another two goals to his already unbelievable tally.

Wellington Silva came on as a second-half substitute with the score 2-1 but he could not help his side cause an upset and a quick-fire brace from the Portuguese international ended the match as a contest.

Jon Toral – Brentford

Spanish midfielder Jon Toral is currently on loan at Championship side Brentford where he has scored two goals and provided two assists thus far.

Having started the last match against Huddersfield, Toral had to make do with a place on the bench against Blackburn Rovers. Brentford ran out 3-1 winners but the Arsenal teenager was not called upon.

Carl Jenkinson – West Ham United

Carl Jenkinson overcame the injury that threatened to rule him out of West Ham United’s match away to Sunderland.

The right-back played the whole match as the Hammers and the Black Cats drew 1-1, a result that saw Sam Allardyce’s side remain in the top four for another week.
