Former Arsenal star Alan Smith believes that Manchester United winger Ashley Young should be applauded for his recent good performances.

Former Arsenal star Alan Smith has been singing the praises of Manchester United winger Ashley Young.

The 29-year-old has been in impressive form for the Red Devils in recent weeks and has made himself an important player in Louis van Gaal’s team.

In nine Premier League appearances so far this season, Young has created five chances, has won 47% of the duels, has a 83% pass accuracy, and a 67% shot accuracy.

The former Aston Villa star, who was linked with a summer move away from Old Trafford, has played as a full-back and has actually excelled in that position.

Smith has been impressed with Young and wrote in The Telegraph: “Ashley Young used to be a figure of fun, derided by Manchester United fans for not being good enough, lambasted by others for constantly flinging himself theatrically to the ground.

“At the moment, however, he is earning the respect of Louis van Gaal for doing a fine job at left-back or, as against Liverpool, at wing-back. Young has shown great character in turning his United career around. This time, he deserves plenty of praise.”

Young has indeed done the job in the last few matches and needs to be applauded for adding versatility to his game.

However, form is temporary, class is permanent. There is a reason why Young was expected by many to leave United in the summer: he is just not good enough to play for one of the biggest clubs in the world.

Signed from Villa in the summer of 2011, Young has had his moments, but he has lacked consistency and is simply not world class.

True, the 29-year-old is doing the job for United for now, but can he do it in the long term?

Probably not.
