Former Aston Villa, Liverpool and England forward Stan Collymore has dismissed the notion that Manchester United’s defence isn’t good enough for them to win the league.
United’s fine run of form has seen them get into a position where they have started to apply a little pressure on Manchester City in second.
Few doubt that strength and talent in United’s attack, but one of the things, which is seen as a key problem for Louis van Gaal is his defence.
United have been forced to chop and change their backline routinely throughout the season due to injuries to key defensive players.
However, Collymore has cited the Liverpool team of last season as a reason why United can still challenge for the league.
Liverpool conceded more goals than Crystal Palace last season, as they finished second, with Palace eventually ending the season in the bottom half of the table.
The Reds came very close to a unique title win and Collymore has argued that Liverpool’s defence last season shows that United’s defence this season shouldn’t be used as an excuse for LvG’s men not being in the mix by March and April.
