PHOTOS: Debuchy stays back to applaud Newcastle fans at Arsenal

The former Newcastle defender applauded supporters at the Emirates Stadium yesterday night.

Mathieu Debuchy enjoyed an eventful first Premier League game against Newcastle United since leaving the Magpies for Arsenal over the summer.

The Frenchman played his first ever match as a centre-back for the Gunners, as his side beat Alan Pardew's men 4-1 at the Emirates Stadium.

And Debuchy was generally given a great reception by Newcastle fans. There has been plenty of debate among supporters about whether he or Daryl Janmaat is the better player - and many are happy the Magpies now have the Dutchman in Debuchy's stead - but the general feeling seemed to be of gratitude for what the 29-year-old did during his time on Tyneside.

Some supporters may have not given him the time of day, of course, but Debuchy certainly gave those that showed him respect his time of day at full-time, when he applauded both Arsenal's home supporters and the Newcastle away fans.

As for the rest of Debuchy's game, here are the best pics of him coming up against his former Newcastle team-mates... the Arsenal home crowd were certainly pleased with his display at the back:
