Liverpool were comfortably beaten by Manchester United today but in all fairness it may have been a different story if it were not for United stopper David De Gea. The Spaniard made several splendid saves to deny the likes of Raheem Sterling and Mario Balotelli throughout the game.
But there was also a goalkeeping story at the other end of the pitch, as Simon Mignolet finally found himself dropped after a string of poor performances for the club.
Instead Brad Jones was called into the team and the former Middlesbrough man did not exactly inspire confidence. He dived the wrong way for Rooney's opener and was in no man's land when Robin van Persie struck the third and final goal of the day.
After the game however Rodgers confirmed that Jones would be staying in goal for the foreseeable future and that Mignolet had 'accepted' his decision.
Accepted, he is probably pleased. The pressure is off for the Liverpool custodian over Christmas and in time he will wrestle the jersey back from Jones, who is simply not good enough to be Liverpool's number one goalie.
He certainly seemed to be enjoying it in training before the game. He was all smiles, looking relaxed and certainly this is the right decision from Rodgers.
Liverpool fans will hope that either Mignolet comes good, or that a new keeper arrives in January.</p
