Manchester United dealt out a crushing 3-0 win over fierce rivals Liverpool this afternoon as goals from Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata and Robin van Persie saw United claim the victory, even though the goalkeeping heroics of David De Gea should not be underestimated.
However there was certainly more than an element of doubt over the second goal.
Ashley Young swung in a delightful cross from the left-wing which was nodded in at the far post by Mata as United went out of sight.
But in between the ball appeared to be nodded on by Van Persie, which would have made Mata about two yards offside.
The linesman and referee obviously felt there was no connection from the Dutch striker as the goal stood, but after the game Van Persie confirmed that Manchester United got lucky.
He told Geoff Shreeves on Sky Sports that he did touch the ball, and he did so with a cheeky smile on his face:
“I got a touch, yes. I have to be honest, so you can put that down as an assist!”
It just goes to show that when you luck is in in football, decisions tend to go your way.
