Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has certainly had it tough in recent weeks. The Belgian, signed from Sunderland for £9 million in 2013, has struggled for form this season. Now he seems to have paid the price for his bad performances, getting dropped for Liverpool's big game against Manchester United this weekend.
Brendan Rodgers decided to bring in back-up stopper Brad Jones for the game, leaving Mignolet on the bench.
It seemed to be an odd time to make the decision, especially considering Jones himself is no world-class goalkeeper.
One person who is not sure about the timing is Jamie Carragher. The Liverpool legend was speaking as a pundit for Sky Sports' coverage of the big game and he feels that the decision to drop Mignolet is a sign that Liverpool will be bringing in a new goalkeeper:
"Massive. I mean it is something I mentioned a couple of weeks ago. He needed to come out of the team, maybe for his own good never mind just the team. But to do it here, today, at Old Trafford. It is not just today but if you look at the picture he [Brendan Rodgers] is basically saying to Simon Mignolet 'I need a new goalkeeper'.
"That's the way I look at it. I think he maybe could have taken him out for a game at Anfield where at times he is making the crowd nervous, his defenders nervous the team nervous at home. To do it away, in a fixture this big. We all figure at the end of the season Liverpool need a new keeper."
Liverpool have been linked with the likes of Victor Valdes and Guillermo Ochoa in recent weeks and it looks like Liverpool will be bringing in a new stopper in January considering that Mignolet has been dropped so close to the window opening.
