Manchester United are in desperate need of a new centre-back.
Manchester United have been linked with a number of defenders ahead of the January transfer window, and Atletico Madrid currently boast the perfect player for them.
And no, it isn’t the much-talked about Diego Godin.
The Uruguayan international has been heavily linked with a big-money move to Old Trafford, but his teammate and compatriot Jose Gimenez has been showing him up in recent weeks.
Gimenez, 19, joined Los Colchoneros in the summer of 2013 for a paltry fee of €1 million, a figure which makes a mockery of signings such as the £20 million Liverpool shelled out for under-fire Dejan Lovren.
Over the course of the last 18 months, the Uruguayan international has had to make do with a place on the bench behind renowned centre-back duo Godin and another touted United target Miranda.
Yet, following Miranda’s spell on the sidelines through injury, Gimenez has won the trust of coach Diego Simeone and has subsequently been selected for first-team duties over the past month.
In four consecutive La Liga starts, his evident ability has shone through as he has outperformed Godin in almost every category imaginable, as demonstrated by renowned statistical website whoscored.com.
He has averaged 4.5 effective clearances, 2.3 interceptions and 1.5 tackles per match, with the La Liga champions conceding just one goal during his six matches in all competitions this season.
The Red Devils have been shaky at the back all season and without former Vicente Calderon idol David de Gea their current place in the top four would be under serious threat.
To consolidate a place in the top four and eventually bridge the gap on Premier League rivals Manchester City and Chelsea, a top defender is a must and Gimenez represents an excellent option.
At 19 years of age, he has a huge career ahead of him and could well turn out to be a far more economical option than the likes of Mats Hummels or the previously linked Eliaquim Mangala.
