What can one really say about Jozy Altidore right now?
During Sunderland's 1-1 draw with West Ham United on Saturday afternoon, the forward had the chance to score from merely yards out. As ever, he fluffed it and the chance went begging.
Sunderland supporters were infuriated, West Ham fans relieved, and boss Gus Poyet admitted he wasn't quite sure what had happened.
"It was the only thing I have watched back. I watched it because I didn’t know what happened - and I still don’t know what happened," Poyet told reporters after the game in rather understated fashion.
"He was devastated. I have never seen Jozy like that before. If Jozy scored you would say to me what a great decision to play him but unfortunately he didn’t.
"We know he needs a goal."
'But unfortunately he didn't' is the key phrase there - and one that seems to sum up Altidore's whole career to date. The Sunderland striker produced a woeful performance against West Ham, with that miss capping it off.
And Black Cats fans were far from happy with the American on Twitter after the 1-1 draw. Many did not mince their words - and the 25-year-old has been branded by some as 'the worst professional footballer ever.'
Jozy Altidore is the worst footballer I've ever seen. Embarrassing. Hope he never plays for #safc again.— Andy McGill (@andy_mcgill) December 13, 2014
