Former Arsenal attacker Paul Merson believes that none of the players Liverpool signed in the summer transfer window has been up to scratch.
The Premier League outfit brought in no fewer than eight players, including Adam Lallana from Southampton for £25 million, Lazar Markovic from Benfica for £20m and Mario Balotelli from AC Milan for £16m.
“Rodgers has to shoulder some of the blame because of the signings he made,” Merson wrote in The Daily Star. “None of them are even a seven out of ten at the moment. And they were all on the bench against Basel.
“if I was the owner of Liverpool and I’d paid £200m in transfers, and all the players I bought are on the bench for the biggest game of the season, I’m not happy.
“Then there was the Real Madrid game that he basically threw away by sending out the reserves. He’s on thin ice, and losing to United would be a disaster for him.”
Merson is quite vocal and outspoken in his analysis pretty much all the time, but in this instance one has to agree with him.
Other than Lallana, none of the Liverpool signings has played well or been consistent. While Alberto Moreno and Javier Manquillo have shown flashes of their brilliance, the likes of Balotelli, Dejan Lovren and Markovic have hardly done much of note.
However, just because the players have not played well so far does not mean that they will not in the coming weeks and months.
A number of the players Brendan Rodgers signed in the summer are young, which means that they will need time to grow and develop.
