Alleged Liverpool target Maxi Pereira could yet remain at current club Benfica according to reports.
The Uruguayan international has been tipped to replace Glen Johnson at Anfield with the Daily Mirror suggesting a £4million price-tag. But Portuguese newspaper A Bola claims the player’s agent and the Primeira Liga champions are working hard in an attempt to finalise a new deal.
The right-back’s current contract expires in the summer and reports have suggested Liverpool could move for the 30-year-old in January.
But now A Bola claims there are a few weeks left to finalise a new deal with Benfica and both sides are working hard to make that happen. That claim suggests Jorge Jesus’s side would rather cash in on him in January than risk losing him for free in the close-season if a new deal is not signed swiftly.
Could the reported interest from Liverpool be an attempt to broker a better deal from his current club? Who knows, but given the presence of Jon Flanagan at Anfield any move for Pereira would make little sense with a number of other positions in far more desperate need of reinforcements.
