Former Arsenal attacker Paul Merson has backed Manchester United to defeat Liverpool at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Sunday.
The 46-year-old predicts United to win the encounter 2-1, but he has harsh words for both the teams.
“I’m going with the lucky team here and picking Man Utd,” Merson wrote on Skysports.com. “They’ve won five on the trot; Southampton they shouldn’t have won, against Stoke last week De Gea made two wonder saves and then they cleared a shot off the line.
“Arsenal should have been out of sight in 30 minutes, they were hanging on against Crystal Palace and then at home to Hull they played well and won 3-0. So it could have easily been one win out of five. I just think United will have too much up front so they’ll win this game.
“Liverpool on the other hand haven’t got anything up front and that’s the problem. Who’s going to hurt United’s average defence? I just don’t see Liverpool hurting them. I know Suarez has gone but Liverpool need to forget about him, it's Daniel Sturridge they're missing, unbelievably.”
It seems that Merson does not rate either United or Liverpool. The former England international claims that Louis van Gaal’s side’s defence is “average”, while states that the Reds have got nothing in attack.
These are damning words from Merson, and perhaps they are a bit too harsh. While neither United nor Liverpool are particularly ‘great’, they do have some very good players who are bound to step up their game on Sunday.
One suspects that there will be mistakes from both United and Liverpool players, but it does promise to be a hugely entertaining game.
