Glen Johnson's contract at Liverpool expires next summer and a new deal seems unlikely, so a January sale to Roma may suit all parties.
The 30-year-old has been at Anfield since 2009 when he signed from Portsmouth and he has made just over 150 appearances for the Reds.
But Johnson's outings in recent times have failed to impress many fans and pundits and it seems that he could be part of a clear out by Brendan Rodgers.
Liverpool would probably rather get a fee by selling the Greenwich-born defender in January rather than letting him leave as a free agent in June 2015, so his future could be decided very soon.
As Johnson arrives, a fellow Englishman may exit Roma in the form of Ashley Cole. The former Chelsea star has never settled with the Giallorossi and it is being suggested that he will head for America.
Roma are in need of defensive reinforcements as they battle Juventus for the Italian title, but at present they don't have vast funds at their disposal and will need to find cut-price options such as Johnson.
The Eternal City side will be rueing crashing out of the Champions League at the group stage, which represents a significant loss of income.
