City University wins the 2014 University Trading Challenge (UK)

A team from City University finished 1st in the 2014 University Trading Challenge held at Kingston University – London’s Graduate Center Trading Floor on December 5th, 2014

London – Competing in a competition against 19 other University Teams, a team from City University finished 1st in the University Trading Challenge held December 5th, 2014. The City University team was part of 80 students, representing 11 universities that participated in a financial trading competition that started November 3rd and concluded at the final day event hosted by Kingston University - London.

A team from Derby University finished second with Greenwich University finishing third in this highly competitive competition.

The University Trading Challenge required the student teams to tackle four distinct challenges and demonstrate their aptitude for consistently selecting and executing trading strategies. These challenges included trading a basket of global securities for the 30-days prior, to a forex trading challenge and a portfolio construction challenge. All teams used simulated trading software provided by CapitalWave Inc.

Each team also prepared and presented a client pitch with risk analysis to a Judging Panel of industry veterans. Casper Marney, Managing Partner from Marney Capital, a London based trading firm, said, “These students were quite amazing, better than I had expected. I believe that they will do quite well in the financial markets”.

Terry Gamell, Director of International Treasury Services, and a corporate sponsor of the event added, “The London University Trading Challenge was an exciting and competitive day and it was good to see students from some of the leading finance programs taking part and enjoying the day. The combination of the four challenges demonstrated the effort that students needed to display that will server them well in their careers. It leaves one with tremendous confidence in the next generation of bankers and financiers.”

Joseph O’Brian, from Fordham University and participant said: “The University Trading Challenge was more competitive than I anticipated. Having participated, I have gained much invaluable knowledge that would not be possible in any classroom. One of the benefits that this competition offers to a participant is the fact that we were able to experience the situations in the real world through the 3 different segments for the competition. Therefore, helping us prepare for our working career in the future.

Bryant Nielson, Director for the University Trading Challenge commented, “It continues to amaze me the quality of students and their concentration on each of the challenges. It is testament to the quality of the academic programs at the participating universities. These students were of extremely high quality and should be hired by firms without any hesitation.”

The University Trading Challenge is a realistic capital market trading competition designed for both Undergraduate and Graduate students seeking degrees in finance.
