Several members of Newcastle United's squad deserve new contracts before theirs expire this summer.
Rather surprisingly, Sammy Ameobi's contract expires this summer - and Newcastle need to renew the 22-year-old's deal as soon as possible.
With youth on his side, Ameobi provides plenty of value for Alan Pardew's side, primarily through his performances on the pitch, where he has shone for the Toon down the left wing this season.
Financially, the need is just as great, however. If Newcastle don't see Ameobi in their long-term plans, why take a loss on the forward? A new deal would add a couple of million to his resale price at the very least.
What's more, former Newcastle midfielder Nolberto Solano believes Amoebi has a bright future at centre-forward at St James' Park...
True, 21-year-old Jak Alnwick would not have been noticed by many before his debut against Chelsea last weekend, meaning his release would have seen very few batted eyelids.
But the Newcastle youngster's debut certainly showed promise, while he has already reportedly attracted attention from QPR and other clubs this term.
Again, taking a cynical approach, the Magpies could make a much greater profit on the goalkeeper should they renew his deal first. Alnwick, however, already looks capable of making an impact on Tyneside.
The Newcastle midfielder and full-back has struggled horribly with injuries but there is no reason he shouldn't be continuing his fitness battles at St James' Park.
The suggestion that he offers little to the side as he is always out injured is a rather insensitive one - and is hopefully not actually held by many, if any - and Pardew stuck Ryan Taylor straight back into his Magpies side as soon as he could.
His next return from injury will hopefully be his last (meaning he continues without fitness issues), allowing him to earn himself a new Newcastle deal through his performances.
