Sunderland summer signing Ricky Alvarez says that Gus Poyet is the main reason that he agreed to a loan move from Inter Milan in the summer.
The Argentine trickster is highly regarded and was an eye-catching addition by the Black Cats during the previous transfer window, with many surprised that the North East outfit were able to land him.
And it seems that Sunderland have Poyet to thank for being able to land the winger, as the tactical plan that he laid out for the winger was too exciting for him to turn down.
“Gus is really the main reason why I’m here," Alvarez told the Sunderland Echo. "He trusted in me and my ability, to bring me here. Now I’m looking to return that faith.
“Gus gives me a lot of freedom when I play and that’s something I really like. I’m not fixed to one particular position, I’m able to move around wherever the spaces are."
So far Alvarez hasn't had the impact that on Sunderland's attacking play that many were hoping he would, due to an injury problem.
Poyet had brought the South American in to offer his side greater flair and creativity in the final third, but the Black Cats have continued to struggle for goals this season.
Sunderland have just 13 goals in 15 Premier League matches to date and Alvarez will be required to add creativity and flair to his team's attack in the coming weeks.
The 26-year-old is still not fully match-fit, but he has appeared off the substitutes' bench in their past two fixtures and will be aiming to start this weekend against West Ham United.
