Well-known sports presenter Richard Keys believes that Manchester United will never return to their period of domination.
United are indisputably the biggest club of England and one of the biggest in the world, with their fanbase and financial strength the envy of many.
However, since the retirement of manager Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013, United have struggled, finishing as low as seventh in the league last season under David Moyes.
Under new boss Louis van Gaal, there have been signs of improvements in recent weeks, but not enough to convince former Sky Sports presenter Keys to believe that they will go back to their old selves.
“As for Utd's current form, I'm delighted to see them back in the C Lge places,” he wrote on his blog. “I refer you to my blog when Van Gaal took over.
“I said he'd make them competitive again and they are, but they're not 'back' as I keep hearing Utd fans say.
"They'll never be 'back' to what they were. Their time has gone. There will never be another period of domination from any English team like they enjoyed.
“And remember my prediction that he'd be gone in 18 months? I hear more than one or two of his 'big' players are muttering about him. The next 12 months at Old Trafford are going to be interesting!”
It is bold of Keys to make such a big prediction about United, but perhaps he is right.
Given how Chelsea and Manchester City have grown in recent years, it will be hard for United to win Premier League title year after year.
Both Chelsea and City are financially very strong, and have better teams at the moment.
This is not to say that United are ‘finished’, but they will certainly have to face more competition and more disappointments in the coming years.
But perhaps this is best for the Premier League, which will become more competitive because of United’s loss of the stranglehold.
