PHOTOS: The last time Alonso and Button were team-mates 13 years ago

Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button will race together for McLaren next season.

McLaren revealed yesterday that Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso would be their starting one and two drivers for next season - with Kevin Magnussen dropping to reserve.

It brings to an end a long and strenuous decision making process but McLaren now have two world champions on the the same team.

But of course this is not the first time the pair have been team-mates.

Back in 2001 Jenson Button left Williams after being replaced by Juan Pablo Montoya and joined Benetton in 2001, who had recently been purchased by Renault.

He was to partner Giancarlo Fisichella at the team. The Benetton team had plenty of talent at the time. The test driver was a talented Australian named Mark Webber whilst they also had a certain Fernando Alonso on their books.

In 2002 Benetton became Renault F1 and Alonso replaced Webber as the main test driver. Button was now partnered by Jarno Trulli and showed some real improvement in his driving that year. But midway through the season it was announced that Alonso would replace him, Button's ride at Renault was over.

The rest is of course history. The decision to replace Button with Alonso was justified in 2005 and 2006 when he won the drivers championship, as Button was with BAR.

Of course he went on to become world champion himself with Brawn GP in 2009 and now, 13 years after they were last team-mates, they are set to try and conquer the world once again.

Even if they have aged a bit...
