Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes that Everton will not finish in the top four of the Premier League this season.
The Toffees are currently 12th in the league table with 18 points from 15 matches, nine points behind fourth-placed West Ham United.
“They are a team that always finish in and around the top six,” Carragher wrote on Skysports.com.
“I think the top four will just be out of their reach, they cannot really compete with the teams who are going for that in terms of squad size and money, which is understandable.
“But they are always knocking on the door and I am sure that when the Europa League is out of the way for the next few months, we will start to see Everton moving up the table.”
What Carragher is saying now was said time and time against last season about Everton, but they gave Arsenal a run for the money.
Eventually the Merseyside outfit finished fifth, but they showed that they can compete with the very best the Premier League has to offer.
There are better teams in the English top flight than Everton, but Roberto Martinez’s team should not be written off just yet.
With Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur all struggling for consistency, the Toffees can inch closer to the top four if they can put together a run of positive runs.
With the Europa League now out of the way, Everton’s focus will now be only on the Premier League. The festive period will give us a better idea whether Martinez’s team can take the fight for a top-four place all the way.
