Now, Chelsea reportedly no longer want the striker, a player on his way down if not at the very lowest point of his career, and Liverpool are right back where they were when Torres left - struggling badly.
But here's the twist. The Reds have no prolific striker to speak of (Daniel Sturridge is out injured) and Torres, according to reports, could be available for free. Indeed, the Daily Mirror report that AC Milan are set to cancel the Spaniard's loan deal - with Chelsea set to offer him out to Premier League clubs for free.
Liverpool haven't quite been linked with a sensational move for their former striker just yet but social media has been abuzz with the suggestion nevertheless. And it seems plenty of Liverpool fans want the Chelsea striker back.
Many Reds fans still hold affection for the 30-year-old, while other supporters are a little more sarcastic in their appraisals of the situation. The overriding theme among the Anfield faithful on Twitter, though, seems to be the following:
'If Torres is available for free, why not? He's better than what we've currently got...'
So could the unthinkable happen!?
