The gird for Formula 1 in 2015 is now confirmed, it would seem, after McLaren confirmed that Jenson Button will retain his seat at the Woking based team for the upcoming campaign. He will be the reserve to Fernando Alonso, who joins from Ferrari, after Sebastien Vettel took his seat.
Unfortunately that means talented Dane Kevin Magnussen is not going to be on the grid for next season.
However McLaren clearly have him in mind for the future. He will stay at McLaren as a reserve and test driver for the 2015 campaign. With the respective ages of Button and Alonso it makes sense for him to be kept in the loop at the team. The likelihood is that he will be back in the seat from 2017.
Throughout what has been a long drawn out process from McLaren Magnussen and Button have both conducted themselves with great humility and Magnussen is unlikely to be angry at the decision, but more accepting.
He even took to Twitter afterwards to let everyone know that, in the words of a famous movie character, 'I'll be back'.
