Ex-Tottenham head coach Tim Sherwood speaks out on Jan Vertonghen again

Former Spurs boss Tim Sherwood has clarified his comments on Jan Vertonghen.

Former Tottenham Hotspur head coach Tim Sherwood has clarified his comments on Jan Vertonghen.

Sherwood caused a storm last week when he claimed the Belgian 'could not defend', after a poor display in the 3-0 loss to Chelsea.

Current boss Mauricio Pochettino then backed his centre-back, insisting he was one of the best defenders in England during his first season.

Sherwood took to TalkSPORT on Thursday and was asked if he had anything to add regarding Vertonghen, and moved to calm his comments a little.

He said: "I was commenting on the game, Jan wouldn't have been happy with his defending on the day, but he's a good player and important for Tottenham.

"All of them are very important for his squad, that's why he uses them."

His comments are not a wholly ringing endorsement for the Belgian, but it should close the matter, with Sherwood not willing to twist the knife further.

He is and always was a manager and pundit who shoots from the hip and calls it like he sees it, perhaps only worrying about the repercussions later if at all.

It does not seem though that he has any grudge towards his former player, and his previous comments were blown out of proportion, and as he states, Vertonghen himself will know he can't have many repeats of the Chelsea performance.
