Andre Schurrle Chelsea vs AS Roma

Chelsea fans took to Twitter on Wednesday night to react to Andre Schurrle's performance in the 3-1 Champions League victory over Sporting Lisbon

Chelsea finished their Champions League group stage campaign unbeaten with a comfortable 3-1 home win over Sporting Lisbon on Wednesday night, as Andre Schurrle made his case for more playing time with an excellent outing.

Cesc Fabregas opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Filipe Luis was brought down by Ricardo Esgaio inside the first ten minutes, before Schurrle added a second shortly after with a fierce short from the edge of the box.

Sporting clawed one back five minutes after the break through Jonathan Silva, but John Obi Mikel restored the home side’s lead and secured all three points, sending their opponents crashing out of the competition in the process.

For Schurrle, the match was one for him to remind Jose Mourinho of his capabilities, and the German forward didn’t disappoint, causing the Portuguese outfit’s defence all kinds of problems before being substituted in the 73rd-minute.

Netting his first goal since September, the World Cup-winner has seen his first-team minutes limited so far this season, with rumours of a potential winter exit circulating in recent weeks, but Mourinho insisted after the match that he remains an important part of his plans moving forward.

“He is in my plans. We had a problem when he went to the national team the last time and he came back very, very ill and was in trouble for quite a long time,” the Portuguese manager told Sky Sports.

“Today he had 75 minutes to improve his form, he is a player who needs to adapt better to the Premier League but is also a player that in three shots usually scores a goal. That’s an important quality.”

Fans certainly seemed impressed with the former Bayer Leverkusen man’s performance, with many taking to Twitter at the final whistle to hail his impact on the night.
