One of the main areas Arsene Wenger has been tipped to improve at Arsenal this winter is holding midfield.
Wenger currently has the experience of Mathieu Flamini and Mikel Arteta in that position, but plenty of fans agree that the side needs a more dynamic player to come in and patrol the space in front of the back four.
One of the main players linked with coming in and doing that job for the team is William Carvalho of Sporting Lisbon.
Arsenal fans were offered the chance to watch the Portuguese star closely as he started for Sporting against Chelsea last night.
It wasn’t the most flattering exhibition of what he’s capable of because he struggled for an hour, picked up a booking and was then taken off before Chelsea could inflict more damage.
Sporting have been very stubborn in relation to his future and are demanding a high fee, which would take a big financial commitment from Arsenal if Wenger decides he’s the player he wants in his side.
Arsenal have been linked with other midfield options but there’s a reason that so many European clubs have been linked with moves for Carvalho.
It’s naïve to judge him based on one performance towards the end of the group stage in the Champions League, but Arsenal fans will be demanding more from him if Wenger decides to invest.
Here’s what a selection of Arsenal fans on Twitter made of his performance last night.
I really hope Arsene is looking at Imbula! Forget Carvalho, Lucas Silva & Kondogbia. Get us Imbula please @Arsenal— Emeke John (@sisquo_delgado) December 11, 2014

Imagine if we paid 30m 3 months ago. RT @barneyronay: William Carvalho. More exciting as a concept than actually in the flesh— Yo. (@Fattcheeked) December 11, 2014
Never seen a bandwagon aborted as quickly as the William Carvalho one.— Arsene's Army (@ArsenesArmy) December 10, 2014
Does William Carvalho ever run? Seems to be light jogging everywhere— Oli Price-Bates (@OliPriceBates) December 10, 2014
William Carvalho hasn't impressed this season. Been really poor the few times I watched him.— El Bichito (@daveelcris) December 10, 2014
William Carvalho looks horrendous tonight. Shows how poor the Portuguese league is. Look at Mangala. Big reputations but both are pants !— James Walker (@jameswalker_13) December 10, 2014
