Over 18 months since beating Tottenham Hotspur in the quarter-finals of the Europa League, Basel crushed the dreams of an English club once again.
Fabian Frei's goal put Basel in front after 25 minutes, and whilst Steven Gerrard did pull one back for the Reds late on, Basel stood strong to go through to the knockout stages.
Brendan Rodgers' men had 61% of possession and 16 shots on goal, but could only score once - and a big reason for that was the contribution of centre back Fabian Schar.
Schar was outstanding in a number of areas, with three blocks, two tackles, six clearances and three interceptions as he kept Liverpool at bay.
Those kind of stats just go to show why Premier League teams are lining up moves for Schar, who is out of contract in 2015 - and they may be convinced to push through a cut-price deal in January after impressing so much against Liverpool.
