Last night was supposed to be the usual Liverpool Anfield heroics. FC Basel, the plucky Swiss side, were to be vanquished by the dominant Liverpool who would then take their rightful place in the next round of the Champions League.
That, was not the case.
Basel played a well executed pressing game that Liverpool's unsuited defence struggled to deal with. When they took the lead through a Fabian Frei strike it was deserved. A red card to Lazar Markovic seemed to have ended the game as a contest but a wonderful free-kick from Steven Gerrard gave Liverpool hope. But, despite their best efforts, they could not find a way beyond Basel - who once again ripped up the script to dump an English side on their back-side.
For one man it was almost too much to take.
Jamie Carragher, a Liverpool legend, has played in many an incredible night at Anfield in the Champions League. For him to watch his beloved side limp out at the Group Stage was obviously tough to swallow.
But he went on to describe what was making it even worse on his official Twitter account...
Thought the night couldn't get any worse but it has, Phillip Degen is now warming up in front of me.— Jamie Carragher (@Carra23) December 9, 2014
Of course Degen was a flop for Liverpool. Signed on a free transfer from Borussia Dortmund in 2008 the swashbuckling right-back played just seven times in the league in three injury-ravaged seasons at Anfield. He collapsed a lung, broke ribs and fractured metatarsals during his time at Liverpool, which proved fruitless for all concerned.
He re-joined boyhood club Basel in 2011 and has gone on to become an important member of their first-team squad. In the end he did not make it on to the pitch, Walter Samuel instead getting the nod. Liverpool fans will be glad a former flop was not able to fully revel in their disappointment.
