Manchester United legend Gary Neville explains why he was wrong about ex-Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville believes that ex-Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini was “proactive” in the Champions League.

Manchester United legend Gary Neville has admitted that he was mistaken about former Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini.

Mancini was in charge of the Citizens between 2009 and 2013, winning the Premier League in 2012 and the FA Cup in 2011.

However, the Italian tactician failed to take City past the group stage of the Champions League, leading many to doubt his European credentials.

Mancini’s tactics in Europe were also criticised by many, but Neville, a former United defender, has now admitted that everyone, including him, could have been wrong about the 50-year-old.

“I am just thinking back to a couple of years ago when we were quite critical at times of Roberto Mancini when they (City) won the league playing in a certain system and in a certain way, and he tried to change it in the Champions League,” he told Sky Sports.

“That was being proactive and we thought why he was changing it. Maybe he was actually seeing things before we saw them.”

Mancini is currently in charge of Italian club Inter Milan.
