Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has backed Bayern Munich to win the Champions League this season.
When asked who he fancies to win Europe’s premier club competition, the former England international defender told Sky Sports: “I will go for Bayern Munich because I think that Bayern and Real Madrid are the two standout sides and no team has ever retained it.”
Bayern Munich and Real Madrid will be many football followers’ favourites, but Barcelona and Chelsea both are in the mix.
Madrid are arguably the strongest team in the competition and have arguably the best attacking unit on the planet, but as Carragher points out, it will not be easy for Carlo Ancelotti’s side to win the competition two years in a row.
Pep Guardiola will have a prove to point with Bayern in the Champions League, and given the performance of the German champions so far this season, he will certainly be optimistic of his side’s chances.
Barcelona have a certain Lionel Messi and a potential future ‘best player of the world’ candidate in Neymar, while Jose Mourinho remains a master tactician who will be determined to lead Chelsea to European glory yet again.
At this point in time, it is hard to see any team beyond the aforementioned four to win the Champions League, but there could be a surprise or two in store as the season progresses.
