Jamie Carragher believes that Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers should have included Adam Lallana in the starting line-up against FC Basel on Tuesday.
England international attacking midfielder Lallana started the Champions League Group B clash on the substitutes’ bench, much to the surprise of many observers.
The £25 million summer signing from Southampton played no part in the match, which finished in a 1-1 draw and ended Liverpool’s hopes of qualifying for the last 16 of Europe’s premier club competition.
Former Liverpool defender Carragher claims that Rodgers made a mistake in his team selection and told Sky Sports: “I would have gone for Lallana. That surprised me.”
Lallana has been one of the very few Liverpool players who have been in decent form, and him not playing a single minute against Basel is indeed bemusing.
The Englishman has been creative and mobile, and his introduction even as a second-half substitute could have given Basel more to think about.
