Everton fans react on Twitter to possible Europa League tie with Liverpool

Merseyside Derby

Liverpool's exit from the Champions League opens up a potential tie with Everton in the Europa League.

It has certainly been contrasting times on Merseyside when it comes to European competition. While Everton have cantered to top spot in their Europa League group ahead of VfL Wolfsburg, Lille and FK Krasnodar the same cannot be said of Liverpool among Europe's elite.

They have finished third in a group containing reigning champions Real Madrid, perennial English-club slayers FC Basel and Bulgarian minnows Ludogorets Razgrad.

That means Liverpool have now dropped into the Europa League for the rest of the season.

Which has of course seen quite a reaction on Twitter.

But rather than Everton fans gloating that Liverpool have plummeted out of the Champions League, although of course there is the odd dig here and there, Everton fans on Twitter seem to be more excited than amused at Liverpool's demise.

Because it would seem most would love to see the pair go head-to-head, potentially over two legs, in a European Merseyside derby.

Of course that would mean both teams getting reasonably far in the competition, but considering Liverpool's strong second half of the campaign last season and Everton's current European showing who knows.

A Merseyside final in Warsaw is certainly a possibility...
