Three early contenders for Southampton’s Player of the Season

St Marys Southampton

As we approach the busy festive period we take a look at three Southampton players surely in line for the end-of-season award.

With the halfway point in the latest Premier League campaign fast approaching, a number of Southampton players have already suggested – with some fine performances – that they will be in line for the Player of the Season award.

There may be a lot of football still to be played but now is as good a time as any to consider who has made the most impact on Ronald Koeman’s side and who could be given the prestigious award if they continue in their current vein.

Here we consider three Southampton players who have impressed the most so far:

Graziano Pelle

Italian striker Graziano Pelle has taken to the English top flight like a duck to water. He may have experienced a worrying goal-drought that ended against Manchester United, but that does not take away from the fact he is Southampton’s best striker for quite some time.

The 29-year-old has scored 10 goals in 18 appearances for the Saints this season and he has a huge role to play as they head into the new year.

Toby Alderweireld

With some of the biggest clubs in the division crying out for a quality centre-back, Southampton got one for free – if only for a season. Toby Alderweireld is proving to be a wonderful addition and the on-loan Belgian international has made an already stable defence even sturdier.

Fans worried following the departure of Dejan Lovren have quickly seen those fears appeased by consistently good performances.

Morgan Schneiderlin

Southampton may have sold a lot of players in the summer but keeping Morgan Schneiderlin has proved a master-stroke.

The French international’s importance was made clear when his departure at half-time against Manchester City saw a 0-0 score-line become a 3-0 defeat.

He is vital to the Saints’ cause and it is no surprise other clubs wanted him, and even less of a surprise that his current side said no.
