Sunderland fans are delighted that Connor Wickham has put pen to paper on a new deal, which will keep him at the club until 2019.
Wickham's original deal was due to expire in the summer, but he will now be kept at the Stadium of Light until he is 25, if he stays for the duration of the contract.
The striker's future had looked uncertain, but this news should have ended any speculation that he could be set to move away from the Wearside.
Wickham has taken a long time to decide whether or not to commit his long-term future to the side. The club had been trying to do a deal since the summer, but only sit down talks with Gus Poyet in the past fortnight have actually managed to get the deal over the line.
So far this season, Wickham has regularly been used out wide, rather than in his preferred position of through the middle, and it is thought that he seeked assurances that he still had a future up-front for the club.
The task for the powerful 21-year-old will now be to fulfil his potential and iron out any weaknesses in his game.
Wickham, on his day, is a major threat to any defence in the country and looks the complete centre-forward.
However, his form has been inconsistent and, prior to a good run of displays more recently, there were concerns over the standard of his displays at the start of the season.
The good news for Wickham is that he appears to be a permanent inclusion in Gus Poyet's starting line-up and the Uruguayan boss is likely to start planning his team around the England youth international's talents now that his long-term future is sorted.
Here is the best reaction from Sunderland fans to the news of Wickham's contract extension on social media site Twitter.
I respect Wickham for not getting his head turned in the summer, want him to kick on now and be the player we need him to be.— gilly (@djgill28) December 9, 2014
Generally, though, Sunderland deserve plenty credit for backing themselves to secure Wickham and delivering it.— Michael Graham (@Capt_Fishpaste) December 9, 2014
I'd sell fletcher, play wickham centre forward and bring in a creative, attacking midfielder to play behind him in a 4-4-1-1— o w e n (@Owennn_Marsh) December 9, 2014
IF (it's a big if) Wickham can push on and start scoring regularly then it's a good deal. Nee good constantly on the wing though— Alban (@KosovanMackem94) December 9, 2014
Good news that Wickham has signed a new 4 year contract. Lots of potential and still adapting to being on the wing.— SAFC Spotlight (@Safc_Spotlight) December 9, 2014
Pleased Wickham has signed. His performances have been underwhelming this season, but the lad proved last season he has the ability! #SAFC— James Hendry (@JWHendry46) December 9, 2014
Very pleased to have Wickham signed up, hasn't hit the standards he promised last season yet but obviously a very bright young talent #Haway— Adam Lawson (@LAD_am) December 9, 2014

Really happy about a new deal for Wickham. He can be frustrating at times but clearly has bags of talent, young and English too #SAFC— Michael Cooney (@Coonsy27) December 9, 2014
Not his biggest fan, I think he could be so much better already, but Wickham signing that new deal is great for us. Bit of intent there too— Gary Baker (@GazbSAFC) December 9, 2014
I don't particularly like Wickham but if he's gonna be here for the next 4 and a half years I might aswell get behind him. #safc— Lewis Nevins (@Lewis_Nevins) December 9, 2014
Think Wickham deserves a chance up top as a main striker, its not like we don't have wingers— Cal Green (@DJCalGreen) December 9, 2014
Buzzing that Connor Wickham has signed new 4 year deal, was resigned to losing him tbh #safc— CRTheTruth (@CRoweTheTruth) December 9, 2014
It can be frustrating to watch Wickham at times but it's so easy to forget he's still only 21. A very talented player with a bright future.— Sunderland Stats (@SunderlandStats) December 9, 2014
